We’re continuing our Meet the Staff series this week with another member of the Business Support Team, Ian Thompson. Like many of our advisors, Ian has a wealth of experience and is a great addition to the team, having lots of personal experience to draw from. Working remotely, Ian takes us through his working day and what he likes to do in his spare time.

What is your current position at Transmit Start-Ups? Tell us a little about your role and what it entails.

I am an Associate Business Advisor. I work directly with applicants, collecting all information in order that we can do our due diligence and prepare an application to put before our Credit team for review.

What does a typical day at Transmit Start-Ups look like for you?

I work remotely from home, so much of my day is spent either on the phone or my laptop, liaising with clients to ensure they understand what is expected of them. I also answer any queries they have and to give clarification to any points they do not understand. We aim to work with clients, not against them. I also work closely with our support team, who are just that – very supportive, to ensure a smooth transition from initial enquiry to loan completion.

What is your background prior to joining Transmit Start-Ups and what made you decide to join the company?

I joined Lloyds Bank straight from school at sixteen and I eventually escaped 37 years later. My background was in Retail Banking but I spent my last ten years as a Business Manager with a portfolio of 250 clients, looking after their everyday financial needs. I decided to join Transmit as they are a friendly yet professional company where the client comes first.

What do you like to do away from the office to relax, do you have any hobbies or other interests?

I like to travel with my wife and love to run and cycle. I was lucky enough to complete the first 30 Great North Runs from 1981- 2010

What is it about working with start-ups that you like?

I still get a buzz from completing a deal for a client. It’s great to see a business in its infancy grow and prosper. A lot of clients stay in touch and it’s nice to hear of their success and know that Transmit played a part in that success

If you could give one tip to a Start Up Loan applicant what would it be?

Do your research, be enthusiastic, know your competition and aim high.

If you’re thinking about setting up your own business or need any advice or questions answered on the start-up process, give us a call or drop us an email, we’d love to hear from you!
